Donations for the Silent Auction
The NCMF is asking for donations of memorabilia for the next Silent Auction at
the General Session in November 2008. If you have pictures or artifacts and
would like to contribute to the next auction please contact Mr. Dave D'Auria
at 443-745-0381 or email him at davedauria@comcast.net.
Museum Library Volunteers Needed
The NCM needs volunteers to help catalog over 1800 books from the Kahn Collection.
Please contact Ms. Rene Stein, 301-688-2145 if you can help.
New Wall Display at the Entrance to the NCM
The new display being developed for the entrance to the NCM is sponsored by the
NCMF and will provide a snapshot of museum exhibits and plans for the new museum.
A special section of the wall will be devoted to recognition of individuals and
organizations who support the work of the Foundation. Mr. Frank Saus, Chairman
of the Facilities Committee has been spearheading the effort and is being assisted
by Mr. Michael Green.
Museum Library
The National Cryptologic Museum Library holds a unique collection
and archives of unclassified and declassified books, documents, and
memorabilia focusing on cryptology and cryptologic history. The goals
of the Library are to support the activities of the National Cryptologic
Museum, to present an overview of the topical literature and materials
to museum visitors, and to provide research facilities for those interested
in the subject. The Library, a non-lending institution, welcomes academicians,
historians, research fellows, high school students, and cryptology
buffs to avail themselves of the wealth of historical and primary source
materials. Rene Stein, Museum Librarian, is available to
assist visitors in using the collection.
Museum Receptionist
The NCMF is now providing the services of volunteer
receptionists for the Museum. Duties of the receptionists include: greeting
museum visitors, advising of the availability of docent tours and the
INFORM/Acoustiguide system (a handheld unit that provides automated
information on Museum exhibits), providing information on the purpose
of the NCMF, and answering general questions asked by the public. This
is a terrific opportunity to volunteer in a friendly place and to become
more aware of the history of signals intelligence and information assurance.
Openings occur periodically, for both permanent receptionists (one day
per week) or as a substitute for vacationing receptionists. The hours
are from approximately 0900-1600, but the possibility of a shorter day
does exist. If you are interested, please contact
the NCMF.
Cryptologic Learning Program – a.k.a
(all kids are) SMART The akaSMART (All
Kids Are Smart) Program’s objective is to
stimulate the interest of students in the study of mathematics at
the elementary through high school levels. The program was
launched in March 2003 as a joint venture between the National Cryptologic
Museum Foundation (NCMF) and akaSMART Corporation (formerly known
as CLP Company) of Herndon, Virginia. The basic idea is to
make math learning an exciting and challenging experience through
the use of internet-derived puzzles and games, which are calibrated
to be in consonance with the educational level of the student and
tailored to meet the learning objectives of the particular math course
or program.
The response to akaSMART by students, teachers,
parents and school officials has been highly favorable, and the program
has been the subject of positive coverage in the local area press. To
date well over 1,000 students have participated in the program and
several area schools have integrated it into their math curricula. Financial
support to the program has been provided by NCMF, the Raytheon Corporation,
the Army Security Agency Association and many groups and individual
donors.
For more detailed information about the
program please see the article in the Spring 2006 edition of the
Foundation’s publication, The LINK.
As a result of the recent tragic
death of Maurice "Morrie" Cove, the administrator of the aka Smart
program, there will be a hiatus before the program can be resumed. Mr.
Cove's son, David, intends to continue the aka Smart Program in
tribute to his father's legacy, but he will need time to become
informed about it. He asks for patience and understanding in the
weeks ahead until he is ready to resume the program.
