Because we were able to exploit Japanese diplomatic ciphers (Purple), the Japanese Ambassador to Germany was an unwitting intelligence source for allied forces in World War II. A confidant of Adolf Hitler, the Ambassador's detailed reports to his superiors in Tokyo were intercepted and decrypted, providing priceless information about German defenses that General Eisenhower was able to use to strategize the successful D-Day invasion of Europe.
